Summary

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) is Australia's national policing agency, aiming to outsmart serious crime with intelligent action. In 2020-21, the AFP disrupted over 400 major criminal operations, seized 38 tonnes of illicit drugs, and charged 235 people with child exploitation. The AFP is giving insight into how they investigate serious crimes, including cybercrime, through Operation Birks.

Operation Birks involves a hacking syndicate that stole millions of dollars from Australians by targeting superannuation funds. The syndicate used stolen personal identification information, bought on the dark web, to set up fake bank accounts and transfer people's superannuation. The AFP's Cybercrime Operations team, led by Detective Jim, investigated the case and found that the syndicate was operating on the dark net, with scammers from around the world connecting and performing different components of the fraud.

The fraud involved using stolen identification documents to set up online accounts, making contact with superannuation funds to change account details, and then putting through fraudulent claims to deposit superannuation into mule bank accounts. The money was then transferred offshore, bought electronics or jewellery, and sold, with the funds returned to Australia as cryptocurrency. The AFP's investigation led to the identification of the syndicate's methods and the vulnerabilities of the superannuation companies, which were then patched.
