Summary

To return to juvenile court jurisdiction and foster care, 18-, 19-, and 20-year-olds who were in foster care on their 18th birthday or meet specific requirements can reopen their court case. Benefits include money to live in supervised foster care, clothing allowance, case management services, and Independent Living Program services. Eligible individuals must plan to finish high school, attend college, or participate in vocational education or job training. They must sign a Voluntary Reentry Agreement with a social worker or probation officer, who will be responsible for their placement and care. To apply, individuals must fill out and file form JV-466, Request to Return to Juvenile Court Jurisdiction and Foster Care, which can be obtained from the court, county courthouse, public library, or the California Courts website. There is no fee to file the form, and a hearing will be scheduled to determine eligibility. If approved, the individual will be allowed to return to foster care and must appear in court within 6 months to report their progress.
