Julie Bergner focuses her research in the area of homotopy theory, considering mathematical objects up to deformation and making connections between fields like topology, representation theory, and algebraic geometry. She has published papers in Geometry and Topology and has been a research fellow at the Hausdorff Research Institute for Mathematics and the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics. Bergner completed her M.S. and Ph.D. at the University of Notre Dame and held appointments at the University of California, Riverside, and Kansas State University.

Francesco Di Plinio concentrates his research in harmonic analysis and partial differential equations, focusing on singular integrals and elliptic regularity in non-smooth domains. He has authored or co-authored 15 published research articles and was a Marie Curie Fellow at the University of Rome and a Tamarkin Assistant Professor at Brown University. Di Plinio obtained his Ph.D. in pure mathematics from Indiana University and plans to help strengthen and expand the Mathematical Analysis research group at the University of Virginia.

Juraj Földes applies mathematical analysis to problems related to chemical reactions, composite materials, biological systems, and fluid flows. He investigates the long-term qualitative properties of differential equations modeling turbulence and the evolution of colonies of bacteria. Földes has published in the Journal of Differential Equation and has received collaborative grants from the Mittag-Leffler Institute and the Banff International Research Station. He earned his Ph.D. degree from the University of Minnesota and was a postdoctoral fellow at Vanderbilt University.

The Mathematics Department has welcomed five new tenure-track and tenured faculty, including Julie Bergner, Francesco Di Plinio, Juraj Földes, Sara Maloni, and Jennifer Morse. The department has also begun a transformation of the way it teaches Calculus, moving to an inquiry-based learning model. The department continues to have many research visitors and activities, including the Seminar on Stochastic Processes and the Virginia Mathematics Lecture Series.
