Summary

The VERD project investigated homeowners' renovation decisions, revealing that certain conditions of domestic life explain why households first start thinking about renovations. Five 'background' conditions were identified: Prioritising, Delineating, Demonstrating, Embodying, and Adapting. Balancing competing commitments with the use of space at home is particularly influential for renovation decisions. The study found that 50% of homeowners were not considering renovations, while 19% were thinking about renovations in general terms, 16% were concretely planning renovations, and 15% were finalising or in the middle of renovations. The research aimed to answer questions about why homeowners renovate, how they decide to renovate and include energy-efficiency measures, and what value propositions are attractive to renovating homeowners.
