Summary

Tompkins County roads are hazardous, with most severe accidents occurring on rural roads, according to a report by the Ithaca-Tompkins County Transportation Council, which analyzed crash data from 2000 to 2010. The report found that Route 392 between North Road and the Village of Dryden line had the highest crash rate, while Route 79 on West Hill had the most severe crashes. Police attribute accidents to speeding, with State Police Capt. Troy Little saying "Speed is the number one killer." The county suffered about nine fatal accidents per year, with most occurring on rural roads. Deer accidents are also a concern, with about 5,200 deer accidents in the county between 2000 and 2010.
