Tokyo Electric Power Company's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant has been investigating groundwater near the intake (seawall) area, and high concentrations of radioactive materials (tritium and strontium) have been detected, exceeding the notified concentration limits. The tritium concentration has increased more than 10 times compared to the previous survey results, and strontium has also been detected above the notified concentration limits. Tokyo Electric Power Company estimates that highly contaminated water may have leaked into the ground and mixed with groundwater.

The company plans to add more observation wells to identify the source of the contamination and its migration pathway, and to enhance monitoring of seawater in the harbor. Urgent measures include improving the ground near the intake area, investigating remaining water in the trench, filling gaps in the foundation gravel layer, and reducing the concentration of radioactive materials in the contaminated water.

The Nuclear Regulation Authority has instructed Tokyo Electric Power Company to evaluate the dispersion of radioactive materials, strengthen monitoring in the harbor, prevent the outflow of radioactive materials into the ocean, and take urgent measures to prevent leakage from the trench on the seaside.
