Summary

RESULTS held a webinar on US poverty in September 2017, discussing the latest Census data, which showed a poverty rate of 12.7% in 2016, with 1 in 8 people living in poverty. The data also revealed significant racial disparities, with 18% of children, 30.8% of Black children, and 26.6% of Hispanic children living below the poverty line. Despite progress, federal programs like SNAP and refundable tax credits, which lifted millions out of poverty, are under threat. The webinar emphasized the need for continued advocacy to protect these programs and promote policies that reduce inequality and poverty. RESULTS' Executive Director, Joanne Carter, highlighted the organization's successful advocacy efforts, including 145 face-to-face meetings with members of Congress and 300 media pieces, and encouraged participants to expand their outreach and build their advocacy muscle. The webinar also featured updates on US poverty campaigns, including the House budget leaders' plans to make deep cuts to entitlement programs, and provided actions for participants to take, such as submitting letters to the editor on the new poverty data.
