Slovakia experienced significant socio-economic changes after the fall of communism in 1989. The country was led by Vladimir Meciar's government from 1993-1998, which resulted in international isolation and economic instability. In 1998, Mikulas Dzurinda's government took over and implemented economic stabilization and structural reforms, making Slovakia a reform and economic leader in the region. The government joined OECD, NATO, and EU, and implemented policies such as banking sector restructuring, privatization, and regulatory reforms. Despite some challenges, including high unemployment, the reforms led to increased foreign investment and economic growth. After the 2006 elections, Robert Fico's government took over, but most of the previous reforms were maintained, except for healthcare reform. Slovakia's socio-economic model was transformed, with a high percentage of private sector contribution to GDP and increased openness to foreign trade.
