Summary

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Smart Snacks nutrition standards apply to competitive foods sold to students during the school day, including cafeterias, vending machines, and fundraisers. The standards include general and nutrient standards for calories, fat, saturated fat, sugar, sodium, and caffeine, and are the same for all grades. Effective July 1, 2024, the USDA eliminated the trans fat standard and added an exemption for bean dips from the total fat standard. Effective July 1, 2025, the final rule requires limits for added sugars in flavored milk. Competitive foods must meet at least one general standard and all nutrient standards to be allowed for sale to students.
