Summary

This handout applies to persons seeking employment in the German economy while present in Germany under the NATO Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) and its Supplementary Agreement (SA), excluding Germans and ordinary residents of Germany. A SOFA card is required for dependents, which replaced the old SOFA stamps as of January 15, 2005, and bears an expiration date. The card serves as a labor permit, but individuals with SOFA status will be subject to German taxes in non-SOFA jobs. Registration at the local Town Hall is not required, and a German Social Security ID Card must be obtained through the employer. Taxation is limited to income generated in non-SOFA jobs in Germany, and a Tax Certificate is required. A written employment contract is recommended, including essential terms such as names and addresses of contracting parties, start of contract, duration of job, place of work, description of work, and pay.
