Summary

Extreme poverty in the world has decreased considerably in the past three decades, from 52% of citizens in the developing world living on less than $1.25 a day in 1981 to 21% in 2010, with the number of people living in extreme poverty dropping from 1.9 billion to 1.2 billion. Despite this progress, 1.2 billion people living in extreme poverty is still a high figure. Sub-Saharan Africa is the only region where the number of poor individuals has risen steadily, with 414 million extremely poor people in 2010, more than twice the number in 1981. The average income of the extremely poor in the developing world has been rising, but in Sub-Saharan Africa, it has remained flat at approximately half of the $1.25 line. The aggregate global extreme poverty gap, the amount needed to bring all extremely poor individuals to the $1.25 line, is approximately $169 billion in 2005 PPP dollars, or 0.25% of global GDP.
