Summary

Migrants, refugees, and internally displaced people constitute a large part of the world's population, with estimates in South Asia ranging from 2.5 million to 50 million. The region's complex history, political and military conflicts, and economic inequalities contribute to displacement and mass migration. Refugees and migrants are often denied important political and social rights, and their voices are rarely heard in public discourse. The media plays a critical role in shaping public discourse, but often reproduces stereotypes and neglects to report on the issues affecting refugees and migrants. A recent consultation involving stakeholders from eight South Asian countries aimed to address these challenges and increase the visibility of refugees and migrants in public discourse.
