Summary

The South Grand Chenier Hydrologic Restoration Project (ME-20) is located in Cameron Parish, Louisiana, and aims to restore marshes and reduce land loss caused by failed agricultural impoundments, pump-offs, saltwater intrusion, and shoreline erosion. The project was approved by the Louisiana Coastal Wetlands Conservation and Restoration Task Force and is sponsored by the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the Louisiana Office of Coastal Protection and Restoration. The project's goals are to nourish emergent marsh with freshwater, nutrients, and sediment, and to restore marsh via dedicated dredging from the Gulf of Mexico. A final engineering design report has been prepared, which includes a revised cost estimate, wetland value assessment, statement of constructability, and other supporting data. The project area has experienced significant land loss, with 9,230 acres (38% of the original marsh) lost over 60 years, primarily due to subsidence, compaction, and oxidation of marsh soils.
