Summary

The European Parliament's Committee on International Trade is responsible for the EU's common commercial policy and external economic relations. The EU has been negotiating trade agreements since the 1970s and now negotiates with partners on every continent. The content of trade agreements has evolved to include commitments beyond WTO rules in areas such as services, intellectual property rights, investment, and regulatory cooperation. The Commission's trade policy strategy is designed along four main axes, including promoting the EU economy in global value chains and improving implementation of existing trade agreements. Current priorities include negotiations on a trade in services agreement, an environmental goods agreement, and FTAs with various countries, as well as reviewing agreements with EU neighborhood countries. The EU has signed an agreement with Canada (CETA) and is provisionally enforcing part of its provisions.
