Summary

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) launched a new Forest Management Standard in June 2019, which came into effect on January 1, 2020. The standard requires FSC-certified organizations to identify and protect representative sample areas of native ecosystems, known as Conservation Area Networks. A group of stakeholders, including environmental organizations and local residents, are expressing interest in the implementation of this standard by the Bancroft Minden Forest Company, particularly in designating the Catchacoma forest as a conservation area due to its high conservation values and cultural significance. They propose that the company undertake a gap analysis and engagement process with Indigenous Peoples and stakeholders to achieve consensus on the designation and management of new conservation areas, with the goal of transitioning these areas to legal protected status. The stakeholders commend the company on its commitment to responsible management and look forward to contributing to the process of identifying ways to add to the conservation network.
