Summary

An estimated 3,890,400 adults were under community supervision at yearend 2020, a 6.6% decline from January 1, 2020. The decline was driven by a reduction in people on probation, which decreased 8.3% from 3,330,200 to 3,053,700. The number of adults on parole increased 1.3% from 851,000 to 862,100. One in 66 adult U.S. residents were supervised in the community at yearend 2020. The probation population declined for the thirteenth straight year, while the parole population increased. From 2005 to 2020, the total adult community supervision population decreased 21%, with a 26.6% decline in adults on probation and a 9.9% increase in adults on parole.
