The US Department of the Interior has awarded $102.7 million in federal matching grants to 54 sites along the Atlantic Coast to help battle future storms. In Queens, six projects were approved, including:
$4.8 million to transform Sunset Cove in Broad Channel into a natural preserve with sea grass plantings, a hiking path, and a raised walking platform.
 $4.4 million to restore the Bronx River shoreline and remove contaminated soil at Starlight Park.
$990,000 to install 14 green streets in Coney Island to mitigate flooding and filter stormwater.
 $4.2 million to reduce flooding and create park space in Spring Creek Park.
* $1 million to develop an oyster population in Jamaica Bay.

The grants aim to promote green infrastructure, such as marshes and wetlands, which provide natural barriers against storms. The projects were selected based on community interest, youth engagement, and resilience against future storms. Additional funding will come from the state and community reconstruction programs.
