Summary

A study of short-term plans in six states found that premiums varied by coverage period and geographic area, with higher premiums for longer coverage periods and lower premiums in rural areas. A hypothetical 57-year-old woman with breast cancer would face significant out-of-pocket costs under a short-term plan, ranging from $111,000 for a 3-month plan to $71,886 for a 12-month plan. In contrast, a marketplace plan would provide more robust coverage and cap in-network cost-sharing at $7,900 per year. The study also found that plan documents were often unclear or unavailable, making it difficult for consumers to assess what services were covered.
