Australian Network on Disability (AND) supports the Australian Government's efforts to establish a Disability Employment Centre of Excellence. AND is a national organization that helps businesses welcome and retain people with disability, with 450 member organizations employing around 2.2 million people. Despite goodwill and commitment from employers and governments, the unemployment rate for people with disability has not improved in over three decades. A Centre of Excellence is needed to provide a one-stop-shop for evidence-based practice, training, and tools to strengthen employers' and employment service providers' capacity to improve disability employment. The Centre's core functions should include researching and developing innovative programs, analyzing current employment programs, conducting trials of new disability-employment models, and providing training and resources for employers. The Centre should assist people with disability, employers, and employment service providers, with a focus on underserviced sectors such as small businesses and rural and remote areas.
