Recent research shows that the leakage of plastics from road markings to the environment is very low, and promoting road marking materials with prolonged service life and appropriate upkeep can eliminate the risk of microplastic emissions. Literature reports estimating microplastic emissions from road markings are often inaccurate and inconsistent, with some studies claiming high data reliability while others indicate high uncertainty. The ERF emphasizes that there is no known reliable analytical method to distinguish pieces of road markings from other pollution sources, and development of such a method should be a key research activity.
