Summary

The Committee on Regional Trade Agreements is to consider systemic implications of regional trade agreements (RTAs) on the multilateral trading system. The Committee has dealt with systemic issues through legal analyses, horizontal comparisons of RTAs, and debate on context and economic aspects. Further work will involve written submissions by delegations and background papers by the Secretariat on thematic surveys of RTA provisions to identify patterns and compare RTA provisions with multilateral disciplines. Priorities for themes will be established, with possible themes including internal trade liberalization, trade-regulatory provisions, other provisions, and institutional framework.
