Summary

Two West Virginia communities, Ranson and Charles Town, overcame the challenge of cleaning up and revitalizing a 1.5-mile strip of brownfields, transforming it into a mixed-use, high-tech hub. The project, known as the Commerce Corridor, involved civic leadership, cooperation, and teamwork, with a commitment to achieving cultural, economic, and environmental benefits. With the help of EPA grants, the cities redeveloped several brownfield sites, including a former metal salvage yard, which is now home to the American Public University System's academic center, and a former manufacturing site, which was repurposed as the Ranson Civic Center. The project has attracted new businesses, created jobs, and improved the quality of life for residents, earning the cities the 2012 EPA Region 3 Phoenix Award and National People's Choice Award.
