Summary

The Tehri Dam Project in India is located near a major fault in a seismic gap, increasing the likelihood of an earthquake greater than magnitude 8, but the dam is only designed to withstand a magnitude 7.2 earthquake. Despite concerns from top seismic experts and the Environmental Appraisal Committee, the Government of India is proceeding with construction, which could result in the loss of millions of lives, dislocation of 85,600 people, and destruction of natural forests and agricultural land. The IUCN General Assembly calls upon the governments involved to refer the safety issue to top seismologists and experts before giving clearance for construction.
