Summary

SCENIHR evaluated the role of tobacco additives in addictiveness and attractiveness of tobacco products. Tobacco has a high addictive potential, but assessing individual additives' addictiveness is difficult. No addictive tobacco additives have been identified, but some, like sugars and menthol, may enhance nicotine's addictiveness indirectly. Technical characteristics of cigarettes influence smoke content and particle size, and smokers may compensate for lower nicotine doses by changing their smoking behavior. Attractiveness is influenced by additives, marketing, and price, but assessing it is challenging due to ethical considerations and lack of animal models.
