The Standing Committee on Alberta's Economic Future met on May 3, 2018, to discuss Bill 201, Employment Standards (Firefighter Leave) Amendment Act, 2018. The bill, sponsored by MLA Wayne Anderson, proposes to amend the Employment Standards Code to include unpaid leave for part-time, casual, or volunteer firefighters and protect them from loss of employment.

MLA Anderson presented the bill, stating that it aims to help firefighters who risk their lives responding to emergencies. He noted that currently, employers can terminate part-time, casual, or volunteer firefighters for missed time due to fulfilling their duties as a firefighter, which he finds unacceptable.

The committee also heard from the Ministry of Labour, with Lenore Neudorf, Assistant Deputy Minister, and Humyra Sabir, Executive Director, in attendance. The committee approved the agenda and adopted the minutes from the previous meeting before proceeding with the review of Bill 201.
