Summary

The BC Treaty Commission celebrates the passage of Bill 41, the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act, which aligns BC laws with international standards and makes BC the first province or territory in Canada to enact legislation implementing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People. The Declaration Act sets out a process to ensure provincial laws are consistent with the UN Declaration and includes provisions for joint decision-making and consent with Indigenous governments. The Treaty Commission supports the implementation of the Declaration Act and notes that treaties operationalize many of the provisions in both the UN Declaration and the Declaration Act, with seven tables advancing to Stage 5 treaty negotiations since October 2018.
