Summary

Education in the UK is a devolved matter, with England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland having their own educational authorities. The English, Welsh, and Irish systems are similar, while the Scottish system differs, with a broader focus on knowledge across more subjects and less examination pressure. The national level in England is shared between the central government and Local Authorities.

Around 94% of pupils attend state schools, and 6% attend private schools. State schools, including faith schools and state-funded boarding schools, are publicly financed, as are nearly all universities, which have low fees. Examination Boards set up and award secondary education qualifications and other qualifications in each member country.

Historically, education in the UK was predominantly offered by the church and religion, with Sunday schools, church schools, and parish apprenticeships. In the 19th and 20th centuries, compulsory education was introduced, along with independent state schools and secondary education. The Butler Act 1944 established the Tripartite System, and later reforms introduced more competition in education, the National Curriculum, and Key Stages.

There are five Examination Boards in the UK, offering a wide range of qualifications. The Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) offers all Scottish qualifications, while the other boards offer National Courses, which can be taken in many subjects, from academic to vocational. Many other certificates, such as HNC and HND, are also available. The Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) and National Qualifications Framework (NQF) provide standard exam rules and statistics, as well as a credit transfer system.

In England, education is compulsory from 5 to 16 years old, with a division into primary and secondary education at the age of 11. The curriculum is based on four Key Stages, with different exams and teachers' assessments to rate attainment. Lessons typically take place from 9-12 and 2-4 o'clock, and students wear school uniforms.

Nursery school is attended by almost all 3 and 4-year-olds in independent schools. Primary education consists of Infant and Junior School, from 5-11 years old, with private and state schools existing. Secondary education is formed by Comprehensive schools and Eleven-plus exam selecting schools, with alternative options including Public Schools.

Post-secondary education includes higher education, with universities offering graduation as Bachelor, Master, and Doctor. Adult education includes access courses, Open Universities, lifelong learning, and other qualifications. The British Educational trend is moving towards more global awareness.
