Summary

Grain production in India increased 69% from 2003 to 2020, relying on local fertilizer availability, particularly urea. To support this growth, ammonia and urea production facilities were built in Bihar, India. However, the construction process posed challenges, including the need to clean and passivate the cooling water system without access to fresh water. A team of engineers and Nalco Water representatives developed a plan to use available water resources, eliminating the need for a $2 million lagoon. The process involved acid pickling, in-system neutralization, and cold passivation, resulting in significant savings, including 72,900 m³ of water and $2,022,681 in total value delivered. The project was successful, and the plants are now producing critical fertilizers for the local agricultural region.
