Summary

State Sen. Dan Hughes' bill to aid counties with augmentation projects passed the legislature, allowing NRDs to make in-lieu of tax payments on land used for public purposes, while Sen. Mike Groene's bill to give NRDs the ability to sell land associated with the NCORPE project failed due to opposition from farm and ranch groups. The Legislature also voted down the extension of a revenue source meant to help manage water in fully or over-appropriated NRDs, which will likely lessen the URNRD's ability to pursue grant funds. Additionally, the Nebraska Supreme Court dismissed two lawsuits involving NRDs and the state Department of Natural Resources, ruling in favor of the NRDs. Agreements between the Republican River Compact states have also reduced the use of the Rock Creek Augmentation Project, with pumps not expected to be turned on until October 2018 at the earliest.
