Sen. Jeff Van Drew blocked the appointment of Larry Niles, a Cumberland County scientist, to the Pinelands Commission. Niles was chosen by the Pinelands Preservation Alliance and environmental groups, and had support from former Gov. Jon S. Corzine. Van Drew claimed the decision was made to ensure the commission had a "new set of eyes" and to balance preservation with the needs of people living and working in the Pinelands. Niles declined to comment extensively, but said he was told the decision was due to his work on fishing limits, which Van Drew denied. The Pinelands Preservation Alliance's executive director, Carleton Montgomery, called the decision "a bad one" and said it made no sense from a public point of view.
