Summary

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed national drinking water standards for six per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), including a Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) of 4.0 parts per trillion (ppt) for PFOA and PFOS. The proposed rule also includes a risk-based standard for mixtures of four additional PFAS compounds. If adopted, the standards would be the most restrictive in the nation, and states and US territories would be required to adopt similar standards within two years. The EPA anticipates that the rule will prevent thousands of deaths and reduce tens of thousands of serious PFAS-attributable illnesses if fully implemented.
