Summary

Women's Aid conducted research to understand how children and young people perceive domestic abuse, gathering data from two surveys of 7-18 year olds and 18-25 year olds. The findings show that important aspects of Relationships, Sex, and Health Education (RSHE) are missing from educational experiences, with a quarter of 18-25 year olds recalling no education on sexual harassment and a third recalling no education on controlling behaviors. Many young people are hesitant to access support, with 50% unsure where to go and 11% not knowing where to seek help. The research also found a correlation between exposure to harmful social media content and unhealthy attitudes towards relationships, with those exposed to misogynistic content more likely to agree with statements reflecting unhealthy perceptions. However, positive social media content can also have a powerful effect on shaping attitudes and increasing knowledge. The report concludes with recommendations for the Department for Education, Home Office, and schools to improve RSHE and provide counternarratives to harmful messaging online.
