Summary

The Wisconsin Occupational Health Surveillance Program releases a report to increase awareness of hazards in Wisconsin workplaces, focusing on work-related asthma (WRA). Data from 1999-2006 shows that WRA contributes approximately 11% to the overall asthma burden in Wisconsin, with 71,000 residents possibly having work-related asthma. WRA affects both men and women, most frequently those aged 35-45, and African-American workers are affected over twice as often as Caucasian workers. Indoor air quality is frequently cited as a cause of WRA in Wisconsin, with dust, smoke, fumes, chemicals, and vapors often making breathing difficult at work. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services has implemented mini-grants for WRA research and interventions to create awareness and prevent workplace exposures.
