Summary

Violent and property crime rates in urban and suburban areas of the US remained stable between 2005 and 2006, with 3.7 million violent crimes, 138,520 personal thefts, and 12 million property crimes reported in 2006. The overall violent crime rate was 23.3 victimizations per 1,000 persons age 12 or older, and the property crime rate was 159.1 per 1,000 households. However, due to changes in survey methodology, national-level estimates were not comparable to previous years. The introduction of a new sample, incorporation of responses from new households, and use of computer-assisted personal interviewing affected the estimates, particularly in rural areas. Despite this, annual nationwide estimates of crime victimization were generated, with US residents age 12 or older experiencing an estimated 25 million crimes of violence and theft in 2006.
