About 85% of furniture currently on the market is believed to already comply with TB117-2013. Compliance with TB117-2013 is mandatory in California starting January 1, 2015. The new standard can be met without flame retardant chemicals, which benefits consumers, retailers, manufacturers, and reduces liability concerns. Voluntary compliance in 2014 allows manufacturers to discontinue use of flame retardant-treated components and gives retailers confidence that products are ready for the 2015 mandatory compliance date.
