平成２８年５月１３日、総務省 総合通信基盤局 電気通信事業部 事業政策課の資料によると、電気通信市場全体の動向は以下の通りである。

主要国内電気通信事業者等の売上高の状況（平成26年度）は、NTTグループが11兆953億円、KDDIグループが4兆7,019億円、ソフトバンクグループが8兆6,702億円である。

昭和６０年の通信自由化以降、主要な電気通信事業者の売上高は約５倍に拡大した。

固定通信市場と移動通信市場の競争状況は、NTT東西が光シェア70％、KDDIグループが光シェア12.8％、ソフトバンクグループが携帯電話等シェア27.8％、NTTドコモが携帯電話等シェア43.3％である。

また、MVNO（Mobile Virtual Network Operator）のシェアは、注２：MVNOのシェアは、携帯電話等シェアの内数である。

競争関係については、NTT東西とKDDIグループ、ソフトバンクグループなどの競争関係が存在する。
