Summary

Human trafficking is a significant public health issue affecting victims' physical and psychological health, with increased risk of acute and chronic health problems. Between 244,000 and 325,000 youth are at risk for sexual exploitation in the US. Barriers to identifying trafficked youth include the violent and intimidating nature of the crime, lack of awareness, and limited opportunities for education and family support. Healthcare providers have a unique opportunity to identify, interact with, and support victims, but only 49% of providers reported being aware of human trafficking as a potential issue for at-risk youth in Vermont. At-risk youth in Vermont who were surveyed reported being forced to do something they did not want to do, needing to have sex for something, and being hurt as a result, with 69% not seeking medical care due to fear, being told not to go, lack of transportation, or money. Increased awareness, education, and training are needed to address human trafficking in Vermont.
