日本では、妊娠満12週以後の死児の出産数は年間約2万人にのぼり、周産期喪失の悲嘆は1年から数年持続する。調査によると、子どもを亡くした後に辛さを感じていた人は、流産や死産の直後で93.0%、6か月後で51.2%、1年経って以降でも32.2%にのぼる。適切な介入・支援によって、問題を軽減することが可能だが、周産期喪失を経験した母親は、社会に認められにくい悲嘆を抱えて孤立しがちである。医療者が患者の悲嘆の支援に果たす役割は非常に大きいと言えます。
