- Attend 3 clinic appointments to learn self-acupuncture using 4 needles (one in each hand and foot).
- Ensure good hygiene, wear spectacles if needed, and check for skin irritation or infection before treatment.
- Insert needles into allocated places (feet: 2 fingers below space between big toe and second toe, hand: web space between thumb and index finger).
- Leave needles in for 30 minutes (10 minutes initially, then stimulate and leave for a further 20 minutes), and administer treatment twice weekly.
- Use a designated sharps container to dispose of needles and store unused needles carefully.
- Contact the Pain nurses or secretaries (Telephone 01942 773099) with concerns or queries.
- Possible side effects include reduction in blood pressure, bleeding, bruising, flare ups, infection, and failure of treatment.
- Inform the pain service if the person receiving treatment becomes pregnant or starts blood thinning drugs.
