Acute Oncology Service (AOS) was developed in the UK in 2009 due to increased cancer treatments, progress in treatments, and increased complications. AOS provides rapid specialist assessment and integrated care, reducing length of stay, symptom burden, and investigational burden. Research shows AOS improves care for cancer patients, outcomes, and coordination between services. In New Zealand, cancer accounts for 30% of deaths, and Auckland City Hospital has over 1,200 inpatient beds and 7,500 admissions per month. A retrospective analysis of patients with cancer discharged from non-cancer services in November 2017 found 303 patients, with 24% dying within 6 months. The most common symptoms in those who died were pain and psychological distress. Goals of care conversations occurred more commonly with specialist oncology and palliative care input. The study indicates the need for an integrated acute oncology-palliative care service to improve care and collaboration.
