Summary

A real-world, big data analysis (REAL-PE) compared the safety of ultrasound-assisted catheter-directed thrombolysis (USCDT) and mechanical thrombectomy (MT) for treating pulmonary embolism (PE). The study analyzed data from 83,612,413 patients, including 535,567 with PE, and found that MT was associated with a higher incidence of major bleeding, hemoglobin reduction, and transfusions compared to USCDT. The results showed that MT had a higher rate of intracranial hemorrhage and major bleeding, as defined by the International Society for Thrombosis and Hemostasis (ISTH) and Bleeding Academic Research Consortium (BARC) 3b definitions. However, there were no significant differences in median length of stay, all-cause 30-day readmission, and in-hospital mortality between the two groups.
