Summary

Hermann Boerhaave (1668–1738) was a Dutch physician and humanist of worldwide fame, considered the founder of clinical medicine. He introduced tutoring at a patient's bed, applied measuring temperature with a thermometer in diagnosis, and examined digestion processes. He founded the first clinical hospital in Leida and described perspiratory glands. The eponym "Boerhaave syndrome" is connected with his person, referring to a spontaneous rupture of the esophagus wall, often caused by chronic massive vomiting. Boerhaave was educated in theology, philosophy, mathematics, and medicine at the University of Leiden, where he became a professor of medicine and botany in 1709. He made significant contributions to the development of medicine and anatomy in Europe in the 18th century.
