Summary

A study of 685 mines rescue brigadesmen in the Ostrava-Karvina Coalfield found that over half had elevated levels of total serum cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, 34% had systolic hypertension, 62.3% were overweight, and 20.4% were obese. The metabolic syndrome was present in 15.2% of the subjects. Despite their physically demanding job, the rescuers' physical fitness was comparable to that of the general untrained Czech population, with every third rescuer not reaching the limit values of maximum oxygen uptake. The study highlights the need for regular health screenings and physical fitness assessments for mines rescue brigadesmen.
