Rheumatoid arthritis, for example, can cause phonation dysfunction due to inflammatory involvement of the annulo-tincture joints in the larynx, leading to symptoms such as pain, obstruction, and voice disorders. Laryngoscopic examination and differentiation from recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy are important for diagnosis, and therapy is mainly based on treating the underlying disease. Studies have found that patients with rheumatoid arthritis often experience voice quality disturbances, including hypofunctional dysphonia, and may have laryngeal pathologies such as Reinke's oedema, vocal fold hypertrophy, and epithelial lesions.
