Approximately 50% of US adults who smoke attempt to quit each year, with three in five previous smokers having successfully quit, and the percentage of US adult current smokers has decreased by 67% over the past 50 years. Despite this, 34 million Americans currently smoke, increasing their risk for comorbidities and resulting in over $170 billion in annual US healthcare costs. To address smoking cessation, clinicians can use various treatments, including pharmacological therapies, behavioral interventions, and smartphone apps. Systematic reviews are a valuable research source, and their abstracts should be free of "spin," which is the intentional or unintentional reporting of results to highlight the beneficial effect of a treatment. This study evaluated the abstracts of systematic reviews and meta-analyses on smoking cessation treatments for spin, finding that 3.5% of the 200 included reviews contained spin, with no study characteristics significantly associated with its presence. The study concludes that 96.5% of the reviewed abstracts were free of spin, but further steps are needed to improve the scientific accuracy of abstracts on smoking cessation treatments.
