Summary

The study investigates the association of MTHFR gene polymorphism with hyperhomocysteinemia and its modulation by vitamin B12 and folic acid in Indian malnourished children. It found that malnourished children had higher plasma homocysteine levels and lower folate and vitamin B12 levels compared to controls. The MTHFR 677C>T polymorphism was also found to be associated with malnutrition, with the TT genotype being more common in malnourished children. The study suggests that genetic polymorphisms, such as MTHFR, can affect nutrient metabolism and increase the risk of malnutrition, and that nutrient deficiencies, such as folate and vitamin B12, can also contribute to malnutrition. The findings highlight the importance of considering genetic and environmental factors in the prevention and treatment of malnutrition.
