Summary

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a common vaginal dysbiosis affecting women of reproductive age, with approximately 50% of cases being symptomatic, characterized by vaginal malodor, discharge, itching, and increased vaginal pH. BV increases the risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as HIV, Neisseria gonorrhea, Chlamydia trachomatis, Trichomonas vaginalis, and herpes simplex virus-2. Despite effective treatment options like metronidazole or clindamycin, recurrence rates are high, with approximately 80% of cases recurring within three months. The etiology of BV is unknown, but it is characterized by an overgrowth of opportunistic bacteria and a decrease in Lactobacilli. A healthy vaginal flora is dominated by Lactobacilli, but some healthy women do not possess a Lactobacillus-dominated vaginal microbiota. The prevalence of BV varies internationally and intranationally, with the highest prevalence in Sub-Saharan Africa and the lowest in Australia and Western Europe. Cultural factors, differences in surveillance techniques, and variations in diagnostic techniques may contribute to these differences. Approximately 50% of BV cases are asymptomatic, and the true prevalence of BV may be underreported due to variations in clinical guidelines and screening practices. Further research is needed to explore the etiology of BV, develop more effective long-term treatment options, and investigate prognostic indicators.

Description
