Summary

Pandemics like COVID-19 have differential impacts on women and men due to biological and gender characteristics, as well as social determinants. The World Health Organization (WHO) calls for investments in gender-sensitive research and incorporation of a gender focus in COVID-19 responses. Key issues include limited availability of sex- and age-disaggregated data, increased violence against women and children during lockdowns, reduced access to sexual and reproductive health services, and increased risk and vulnerability for health and social workers, who are mostly women. The WHO makes three key asks:

1. Collect, report, and analyze data on confirmed COVID-19 cases and deaths disaggregated by sex and age.
2. Include responses to violence against women as an essential service within the COVID-19 response.
3. Maintain the availability of and equitable access to sexual and reproductive health services.

Additionally, the WHO emphasizes the need for equitable access to training, personal protective equipment, and psychosocial support for health and social workers, as well as meaningful involvement of women health workers in decision-making.
