Summary

Researchers investigated chromosomal instability, γ-H2AX foci, polymorphisms in DNA repair genes, and apoptosis as potential biomarkers for prostate and cervical cancer susceptibility. The study included 30 prostate cancer patients, 30 cervical cancer patients, and 30 healthy male and female donors. Results showed that the homozygous variant in XRCC1 was associated with prostate cancer risk, and low apoptotic response was connected to cervical cancer risk. However, the study concluded that cancer susceptibility is a complex phenotype that cannot be readily detected by functional assays or analysis of single nucleotide polymorphisms in a few selected genes.
