Summary

Cancer is a growing health challenge in First Nations populations in Ontario, with rising cancer rates and lower survival chances. Organized cancer screening programs exist, but participation is lower among First Nations populations. The Wequedong Lodge Cancer Screening Research Project aimed to understand barriers to and supports for cancer screening in Northwestern Ontario's First Nations communities. The project used a qualitative research approach, completing in-depth interviews with 29 First Nations community members, community health workers, and primary care providers. The research team developed interview guides, collected and analyzed data, and shared findings, with ongoing leadership and direction from the Wequedong Lodge Community Advisory Group.
